Sports Central – WIRB 1490AM
Sports Central was the bold creation of Kyle St. Andrews, written, directed, and hosted in partnership with the station owner at Gospel Radio WIRB 1490AM. Airing every Friday night throughout football season—from the kickoff of the very first game to the final whistle of the last playoff—the show quickly became a Wiregrass staple.
What made Sports Central revolutionary was its ambitious scope. Kyle and his co-host, Sir Travis, didn’t just cover a handful of schools; they tracked dozens across the region, constantly pushing the bar higher in live high school football coverage. So much so, in fact, that competing stations in the Wiregrass were forced to step back and rethink their own formats.
Between live play-by-play and scoreboard updates, the duo filled the airwaves with talk segments infused with their signature back-and-forth dynamic, all while weaving in a blend of Christian music that gave the program a distinct voice unlike any other sports broadcast.
Kyle St. Andrews was known for taking the concept to the extreme. One unforgettable night, he pulled off triple coverage across two counties—reporting on the first quarter of the New Brockton Gamecocks, sliding into the second-quarter action of the Enterprise Wildcats, and wrapping up with the third quarter of the Daleville Warhawks. It was a feat of coordination and energy that showcased not only his love for the game but also his skill as a broadcaster and director.
Sports Central wasn’t just a sports show—it was a regional phenomenon, setting a new standard for how live high school football could be experienced on the radio.
